Stormwater Harvesting
Our goal is to assist Canberra in becoming a leading water sensitive city, share our knowledge of the systems and in turn set the standard for the rest of Australia to follow.
What is Water Sensitive Urban Design?
WSUD is an approach to urban land planning and engineering design’s aimed at minimising environmental degradation, to help improve visual appeal and increase recreational practicality to the surrounding environment.
Why implement WSUD in Canberra?
The biggest advantages with introducing WSUD devices into our community is the reduction of mains portable water consumption, maximise water re-use and minimise multiple stormwater water pollutants entering our major water bodies.
Other major advantages include:
Maximise ground water protection.
Restore close to natural flow rates back to our water ways.
Minimise greenhouse emissions by reducing water consumption and increasing rainwater harvesting.
Improve habitat and biodiversity.
Reduce downstream flooding.
Enhanced aesthetics by increasing vegetation, wetlands, ponds and landscaping.
Replacement of pipes with natural designs and elements for drainage systems.
Combining urban and natural environments.
Greener streets and a reduction of the ‘urban heat’ effect.
Increase land value.
Improve sustainability of industries, tourism and other businesses that rely on healthy waterways.
Minimise development costs e.g.: storm drain info-structure.
Some of the WSUD tools and devices Canberra Clear offer include:
Rain gardens
Street tree pits
Porous paving
Domestic wetland construction and planting
Swales
Bio-retention swales
Buffer strips
Wicking beds
Wicking trenches
Canberra Clear’s commitment to on-going training ensures all employees are kept up–to-date with the latest methods in sustainable urban water management and understand the importance of precision within each construction and maintenance phase to uphold the integrity of the system.
We believe WSUD systems are without a doubt the way of the future and we look forward to being an integral part of Canberra becoming national water sensitive leaders while continually improving our approach to WSUD systems.
